Stenosis involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, which limits the amount of space available for the spinal cord and nerves, which compresses and pinches nerves in the spine. It is a normal part of the ageing process and someone with stenosis tends to lean forward or feel as though they are falling forward. The condition is often referred to as the ’shopping cart syndrome’ as those who live with pain from stenosis usually find the symptoms improve when they lean forward like when pushing a shopping cart.

Stenosis is a normal part of the ageing process meaning a mild case doesn’t normally cause issues however you don’t want the condition to get to the point you are leaned too far forward to the point you are hunched over.

There are several stretches that can be done, while lying down, to help relieve stenosis pain.

These stretches will help to open the lower back area and improve mobility. As with all stretches, they should be pain free and if you don’t feel they are working, then don’t do them.
